Do not underestimate the power of purr!

DreamWorks’ latest 3-D animated film, “Puss in Boots,” made a giant opening last weekend with an estimated $34 million.

Although the movie is a spinoff from “Shrek” series, the lovable cat character proved that it can stand alone without Shrek, Princess Fiona, Donkey, or even Fairy Godmother.

The PG-rated film scored with family audiences on the weekend before Halloween, and thus became the No. 1 movie on last weekend’s box office.

The popular character of the movie -which distributed by Paramount Pictures- was voiced by Antonio Banderas, drew a large Hispanic crowd, about 35 percent of its audience.

On second position is low-budget horror film “Paranormal Activity 3.” It took in $18.5 million in its second week of release, bringing its cumulative total to $81.3 million.

Third position was grabbed by 20th Century Fox’s new release, the Justin Timberlake sci-fi thriller “In Time,” opened with $12 million domestically but took in more ($14.5 million) overseas.

Here’s the complete list of top ten movies, with estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com.
