Amy Winehouse Canceled Part of Her European Tour
It’s still going downhill for Amy Winehouse.
The English singer had decided to cancel part of her European tour on Sunday, a day after a disappointing performance in Belgrade, Serbia.
Winehouse was heavily booed for being an hour late and displaying erratic behavior on stage during her opening-night concert late Saturday.
The 27-year-old “Valerie” singer struggled to perform her songs and keep her balance as her band gamely played on. On some tunes, the audience did most of the singing.
On other occasions, she dropped the microphone, lectured her bandmates, and anxiously clutched her arms. She appeared to be reading the lyrics from a teleprompter.
The concert was supposed to be a kickoff for a 12-date tour of Europe. But apparently after the unpleasant night, Winehouse decided to cancel appearances in Istanbul on Monday and in Athens on Wednesday, as written in a statement released by her representative.
The statement said, “Despite feeling sure that she wanted to fulfill these commitments, she has agreed with management that she cannot perform to the best of her ability and will return home.”
“She would like to apologize to fans expecting to see her at the shows but feels that this is the right thing to do,” it continued. The statement also added that her next show is scheduled for July 8 in Spain. The tour was to end in Bucharest, Romania, on Aug. 15.
Belgrade media and fans heaped abuse on her in the aftermath of the show. Serbian media described the concert before 20,000 fans as a “scandal” and a “disaster.”
Winehouse has been getting help for years as she struggled with substance abuse problems. She rose to mainstream fame in 2006 with the hit single “Rehab,” and won four Grammys awards in 2008 including best new artist and album of the year.
The singer, who has a bouffant hairdo as her trademark, was actually quite an awesome musician, but her music in recent years has been overshadowed by her drug use and run-ins with the law.
Oh, Amy… it’s sad to see you like this. :(
