“Super 8″ is The New Box Office Champion!
We got a new champion at the box office!
According to reports, “Super 8″ grabbed the box office’s top spot in its first weekend, taking home $37 million.
With that earnings, the J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg’s sci-film defeated last week’s top film, “X-Men: First Class,” which ranked second with $25 million.
Set in 1979, the flick centers around a group of kids filming a home movie during a violent train crash. The crash may have released an alien-like being into town.
Worldwide, the mystery-shrouded film (which had a $50 million budget) earned nearly $45 million overall.
Following at No. 3 is “The Hangover Part II,” earning an additional $18.5 million in its third week, and has now grossed $216.6 million — making it the year’s top-grossing film so far.
“Kung Fu Panda 2″ attracted $16.6 million to place fourth. While “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” drew $10.8 million and also crossed the $200 million mark.
Rounding out the top 10 are: Bridesmaids (No. 6, $10.2 million), Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer (No. 7, $6.2 million), Midnight in Paris (No. 8, $6.1 million), Thor (No. 9, $2.4 million) and Fast Five (No. 10, $1.7 million).
