“Thor” Dominates This Week’s Box Office

Say hello to our new hero at the top spot of box office… it’s “Thor”!!
In its opening weekend, the superhero film grossed an estimated $66 million, and therefore made its way to the #1 spot, defeating last week winner “Fast Five.”
Starring newcomer Chris Hemsworth, and Oscar winners Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins, the action film was distributed by Paramount and produced by Marvel Studios.
With the new record, “Thor” became the third highest debut of a Marvel flick, placing behind “Spider-Man” and “Iron Man.”
Last week’s champ, “Fast Five,” is now in the second spot with $32.5 million. In just two weeks, the fifth installment of the Paul Walker-Vin Diesel “Fast and the Furious” franchise has sped to nearly $140 million, becomes biggest April opening ever.
In the battle of the new romantic comedies, “Jumping the Broom” narrowly beat “Something Borrowed.” The former came in third and drew $13.7 million, while the latter attracted $13.1 million and ranked fourth.
“Rio,” the 3-D animated film featuring the voices of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway rounded out the top 5 with an estimated $8.2 million in box office receipts. It now totals some $114.9 million.
While at No. 6, “Water for Elephants” earned $5.6 million. Tyler Perry’s “Madea’s Big Happy Family” followed, garnering $3.9 million.
Rounding out the top 10: Prom (No. 8, $2.4 million), Soul Surfer (No. 9, $2.1 million) and Hoodwinked Too! (No. 10, $1.9 million).
