“Jackass 3-D” Knocked Down “The Social Network” from Box Office’s Top Spot
Looks like thumbs were given so much more to “Jackass 3-D” rather than “The Social Network” this week.
The comedy stunt movie dominated with a $50 million debut, an accomplishment that could be rephrased to: kicking “The Social Network” in the bottom.
It toppled the Facebook movie from its two-week reign over North American movie theaters, and it was easily called as the stunt gang’s biggest opening yet. More records broken; it was Hollywood’s biggest opener since “Inception” three long months ago and it was 3-D’s biggest opener since “Despicable Me” around three and a half months ago.
Meanwhile, spy thriller “Red” starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren took 22.5 million dollars for the second spot with a tale of retired agents who get back into the game. Last week’s champion, “The Social Network” fell to third place with 11 million in ticket sales in its third week in theaters. It took home 63.1 million dollars overall.
Disney’s “Secretariat,” about a race horse who won the Triple Crown, came in fourth with 9.5 million dollars over the weekend. Followed by Katherine Heigl’s “Life As We Know It” with $9.2 million and $28.9 million overall.
Here’s a complete look at the weekend’s top-grossing films, per Friday-Sunday estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations:
1. Jackass 3-D, $50 million
2. Red, $22.5 million
3. The Social Network, $11 million
4. Secretariat, $9.5 million
5. Life As We Know It, $9.2 million
6. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, $4.2 million
7. The Town, $4 million
8. My Soul to Take, $3.2 million
9. Easy A, $2.7 million
