George Clooney’s “The American” Topped the Weekend Box Office

Another weekend, another champion sits on the box office’s throne.
George Clooney’s assassin drama titled “The American,” took over the weekend box office’s No. 1 spot from “Takers,” with an estimated $13 million, according to studio estimates on Sunday. The haul brought the spy film to a total of $16.1 million since it debuted Wednesday.
Now sitting at No. 2 spot, former champ “Takers” pulled in $11.45 million, bringing its two-week total to $37.9 million. Robert Rodriquez’s new action flick “Machete,” starring Danny Trejo (and Lindsay Lohan), debuted at No. 3 with $11.3 million, while “The Last Exorcism” fell to No. 4 with $7.6 million.
Rounding up the top five was “Going the Distance,” Drew Barrymore’s latest romantic comedy with co-star (and her on-off boyfriend) Justin Long, with just $6.9 million.
