Apparently, a 3-day lead wasn’t enough for “The Last Exorcism.”

Bad news for the box office’s weekend champ, as its throne had been stripped Monday by “Takers.” In a turnabout from early studio estimates, the action flick narrowly beat out former horror champ by earning just 145,000 dollars more.

Sunday’s estimates put “Last Exorcism” at $21.3 million, a slim $300,000 advantage over “Takers” with $21 million. But final box office figures released on Monday showed “Takers” from Sony Pictures raking in $20.51 million, just edging out Lionsgate’s psychological thriller, which had a haul of $20.36.

Elsewhere, the remaining top five stayed in the same position. Last week’s No. 1, “The Expendables,” slipped to No. 3 with $9.5 million, taking the total for the all-star mercenary action saga to $82 million after three weeks.

Julia Roberts’ romantic travelogue “Eat Pray Love” also fell one spot to No. 4 with $6.8 million in its third weekend, while Will Ferrell cop comedy “The Other Guys” was steady at No. 5 with $6.2 million. Their respective totals stand at $60.7 million and $99.3 million.

At number six was “Vampires Suck,” a parody of the “Twilight” series, which took 5.2 million dollars after debuting last week at the number two spot. And after spending last week at ninth place, blockbuster “Inception” jumped back up two places to number seven, showing the movie’s staying power with audiences. The mind-bending flick took 4.8 million dollars over the weekend to bring its seven week earnings to 270.5 million dollars.

“Nanny McPhee Returns,” a sequel which starred British actress Emma Thompson, stayed put at number eight, earning 4.7 million dollars, while Jennifer Aniston’s latest romantic comedy “The Switch” slipped two spots to number nine with earnings of 4.6 million dollars. Rounding out the top 10 was summer horror spoof “Piranha 3D,” which slipped four places after its debut last week, taking in 4.3 million dollars.

Well played, Takers. Congrats!
