It was a night of celebration in the country music world, and Carrie Underwood had her own two awards to celebrate.
The Last Name singer was the night’s only multiple winner, as she took home two trophies at the 2010 CMT Music Awards.
Underwood won Wednesday night’s top honor, video of the year for “Cowboy Casanova,” and CMT performance of the year for “Temporary Home.”
Both awards are chosen by fans tuned into the live shows. So it was appropriate when in her speech, the 27-year-old former winner of American Idol shouted, “Awesome fans! Awesome, awesome, amazing, awesome, awesome!”
The ceremony was held at the Bridgestone Arena in downtown Nashville, a city that is still recovering from the recent devastating floods. It was hosted by Kid Rock and broadcast live from Nashville.
Fans lined up outside the show’s venue to watch most of country music’s biggest stars walk the red carpet. Some interacted with fans, signing autographs and posing for pictures.
The CMT Awards, which are chosen exclusively by fan voting, were another salute to some of country music’s top young stars. Lady Antebellum continued its scorching run by winning group video of the year for the trio’s crossover hit “Need You Now” and Miranda Lambert taking female video of the year for “White Liar,” her first No.1 song.
Lambert’s “White Liar” video features the red-hot singer ditching her dishonest husband-to-be at the alter for his cheating ways. “Let’s just hope that my next wedding doesn’t end up like that video,” she joked.
Keith Urban won male video of the year for “‘Til Summer Comes Around.” After sending a shoutout to his wife, actress Nicole Kidman, who attended the awards, he turned serious and talked of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The 42-year-old crooner said, “I want to send my deepest love to all the families around the gulf, who are going through an insane time right now. We’ve never seen anything like this – emotions I can’t even find words for as I watch this thing happening on TV.”
A few minutes later Urban lit up the stage with a scorching guitar duel with John Mayer as the two played “Hit The Ground Runnin’.” Commenting on the guitarist duet performance, host Kid Rock said, “John Mayer and Keith Urban making love on guitars.”
It was one of the hottest performances in a night full of them. Saturday Night Live star Kenan Thompson helped bring the laughs. Thompson took the stage in a green dress and red wig to match Reba McEntire, who poked fun at Thomspon’s impersonation of her.
While later in the evening, Paula Deen got in touch with her “Joisey” side thanks to a few tips from the Jersey Shore cast; Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino. They dubbed the celebrity chef “Mama Hoecake.”
Further more, as an effort to help the city being rebuild, CMT and the website Rhapsody donated part of the profits made from the nominated songs to flood relief efforts.
