Carrie Underwood did it again!
The Jesus Take the Wheel singer was named country music’s top entertainer for the second year in a row on Sunday, therefore, made history at the Academy of Country Music Awards, becoming the first woman to win entertainer of the year twice.
She also grabbed the Triple Crown award for having already won three top awards — new artist, female vocalist and entertainer of the year — during the course of her career. Underwood got her fame after being the fourth season winner of the popular singing competition, American Idol.
When accepting the award, 27-year-old Underwood said, “I think I just got makeup all over Brad Paisley.” She then continued, “Thank you, God, praise the Lord. Thank you country music, God bless you country music.”
Country music stars gathered at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Sunday night for the awards hosted by Reba McEntire. Other than Underwood, that night was a great night for Lady Antebellum. The top-selling trio was the dominant winner, grabbing five trophies. Followed by their friend Miranda Lambert, who won three awards.
Brad Paisley was named top male vocalist for the fourth year in a row, while Miranda Lambert was named top female vocalist and given the prestigious award for best album for “Revolution,” as well as taking home the best video prize for “White Liar.”
In accepting the best album trophy, 26-year-old Lambert said, “This music is what I do, it’s the only thing I live for, thanks for loving it.” Backstage, she seemed to be still stunned, telling reporters: “Are you freaking kidding me? I’m completely shocked. I don’t even know what to say. That came out nowhere for me.”
Brooks & Dunn, who have announced that they will split up after a farewell tour, won for best vocal duo for the 10th time in their two-decade long career. Luke Bryan was give the best new artist award.
And as for Taylor Swift, who won album of the year last year, unfortunately had to go back home empty handed this year, despite being nominated for five awards.
But she had a big performance that night, began her rendition of “Change” while soaring over the crowd on a platform. She ripped off her white dress and reveal a black outfit underneath, made her way through the crowd and joined the Tritones, a college a capella group on stage for a spirited chorus. And then took a dive to the crowd!
