Ricky Martin decided to coming out of the closet, finally ending years of rumors and speculations.
On Monday, the Latin pop star announced he was gay in a blog posting on his website. The statement said: “I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.”

He later explained that his decision to divulge his sexual orientation marks “an amazing turning point in my life,” and it started a few months ago when he began the process of writing his memoirs.
As he wrote, “From the moment I wrote the first phrase I was sure the book was the tool that was going to help me free myself from things I was carrying within me for a long time. Things that were too heavy for me to keep inside.” He continued, “Writing this account of my life, I got very close to my truth. And this is something worth celebrating.”
The Livin’ La Vida Loca singer added that he did not come out earlier because advisers over the years had warned that he might ruin his career were he to reveal to his fans that he is gay. “Many people told me… ‘all the years you’ve worked and everything you’ve built will collapse,’” he wrote.
Further more, he wrote, “Because all this advice came from people who I love dearly, I decided to move on with my life not sharing with the world my entire truth. Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage. Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions.”
Martin became a father to twin sons via a surrogate in 2008 and at the time no details were given about the birth or the mother. But because the factor of parenthood, Martin decided to do this. “This is just what I need especially now that I am the father of two beautiful boys that are so full of light and who with their outlook teach me new things every day. To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids were born with,” he wrote.
He concluded the statement by saying that coming out “fills me with strength and courage. Today is my day, this is my time, and this is my moment.”
The Puerto Rican pop star records and performs mostly in Spanish but also has been a star in both North America and South America, thanks to the release of his 1999 self-titled English album, a multiplatinum success that included the hits Livin’ La Vida Loca and Shake Your Bon-Bon. Martin’s book is still a work in progress.
