Star Trek - The Future Begins

Go USS Enterprise!

The earnings from the new version of Star Trek will make Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock proud. The movie established a stunning 76.5 million dollars in its opening weekend, making it the new number one this week.

Paramount Pictures had estimated that the movie would make about $50 million for the weekend, and pretty sure that the positive reviews it gets will boost more in the income. As Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore expected, the $140 million budget movie should gross over $200 million total this summer, even with competition like Terminator: Salvation coming on May 21 and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince arriving in theaters July 15.

Moore was not only praise about the movie’s earnings, but also its director, J. J. Abrams. As Moore said, “Abrams got it right, by appealing to both hardcore Star Trek fans as well as moviegoers who may not have been familiar with the 1960s television series and the many movies and TV spin-offs it spawned. It just shows you how talented he is and what a great movie he made.”

The movie which stars Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, explores the backstories of the pair, separately, before they unite aboard the USS Enterprise to combat Nero (Eric Bana), a Romulan from the future who threatens the United Federation of Planets. It also features an appearance by Leonard Nimoy as an older version of the half-Vulcan, half-human Spock.

With these results, I believe the captain’s log will be read as: an awesome journey!
